Guinness World Records says it's yet to verify a
report which says a Gauteng woman has given birth to 10 babies.
According to IOL, Gosiame Thamara Sithole birthed 10 children in a Pretoria hospital on Monday.
The article goes on to say the 37-year-old mother welcomed seven boys and three girls via c-section.
In an AFP report in May, a Malian woman, Halima Cisse gave birth to nine babies.
Guinness World Records' senior publicist Jessica Dawes says they are aware of the reports that "Gosiame Thamara Sithole has given birth to decuplets, and we send our congratulations and best wishes to the family.
"At the current time we are yet to verify this as a record as the wellbeing of both the mother and babies is of top priority. Our records team alongside a specialist consultant are looking into this and will provide any information as soon as possible."
Meanwhile, government is calling for more information.
"Government has noted media reports and social media posts alleging that a South African woman has given birth to 10 babies and reportedly broken the world record. The posts attribute the birth of the babies to Gosiame Thamara Sithole from Gauteng.
“Government has been unable to verify the authenticity of this birth at our facilities. We need to verify this story and provide assistance where needed," says spokesperson Phumla Williams.
