Updated | By Lauren Beukes
The legendary Gambit the Dolphin has died at the age of 48.
The South African Association for Marine Biological Research says he died peacefully today at the Ushaka Marine World in Durban.
Weighing just under 500 kg, Gambit was the largest bottlenose in any oceanarium in the world.
He's also believed to have been one of the oldest dolphins in the world.
The father of seven and grandfather of one leaves behind and a legacy in wildlife conservation.
SAAMBR's Dr Judy Mann, has known Gambit for the last 25 years. Gambit's had a huge impact on many lives - including hers.
"When I cam here as a child with my mom and day to the old Durban aquarium and I first saw Gambit - it was part of what inspired me to follow in this world like many of us marine biologists."
Mann says Gambit had carried the flag for marine education since the 70s - adding they're incredibly grateful for him.
"Gambit was an absolute ambassador for the ocean. Gambit has been with us for many years. During his time with us, he has been able to inspire millions of people to care for the ocean, and we are incredibly grateful for him being with us."
