FUL urges Electoral Court to publish reasons for Zuma ruling
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Freedom Under Law has joined calls for the Electoral Court to release its reasons for overturning the IEC's decision to bar Jacob Zuma from taking part in the general elections as a candidate.
The IEC said the former president was not eligible due to his contempt of court conviction and 15-month prison sentence.
The uMkhonto we Sizwe party challenged the IEC move, with the Electoral Court ruling in the new party's favour on Tuesday.
Freedom Under Law's Chris Oxtoby says the need for an urgent decision was understandable with the May 29th elections around the corner.

He says the basis for the court's ruling is important as a general precedent.
"We only have the order saying that the IEC decision is overturned and that he is able to be included on the party list. In the absence of the actual reasons for the decision, we really don't know and we are forced to speculate on what the basis of the court’s decision for that is.
"That, we think, is a problem for exactly this reason because it is such a politically charged and contentious area. We really need to know and have the full reasons for the decision as soon as possible."
