Freight management group warns of 'dire' situation at ports

A freight management group says the situation at South Africa's commercial ports is dire.

The association of freight forwarders says the country's losing close to R100 million because of ongoing problems like congestion and container backlogs. 

 

The South African Association of Freight Forwarders says concern over the marine traffic snarl-up at our commercial port is growing daily.  

 

It's been monitoring the situation in cities like Durban and Cape Town.  

 

The group's Mike Walwyn says about 96 containers are waiting to be offloaded and anchored outside the country's ports.

"The crisis has been developing over a long period and now it's far more significant than the October strike last year."

 

Danish shipping giant Maersk says prolonged waiting times to berth have increased operating costs.
