Food wastage high in KZN
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The KwaZulu-Natal Waste Management Service says despite the tough economic times, food wastage remains high in the province.
It says at least 40% of all waste that is produced is food that has gone past its sell by date or that is just thrown away in households.
Chairperson Lindsay Strachan says that although a lot is wasted, some of it is reused as feed, among other things.
"It is directly related to income streams of people, how much food waste is produced and also the types of food.
"There's a lot packaging with regards to foods when going into certain stores, there's a lot of packaging material around it," he said.
