First responders urge motorist to slow down to reduce roadside crashes

IPSS Medical Rescue has issued the message after five emergency response members including tow truck operators were injured in a secondary collision near Tongaat, north of Durban. 

Spokesperson Samantha Meyrick says the group was busy clearing the scene after a road crash on Watson Highway, when a car slammed into them last night.

"5 members from Big Show Towing, F1 Towing and Search, were left with injuries ranging from serious to critical. Patients were stabilised on scene by Netcare and IPSS Medical advance support before we transported them to various facilities for further care. 

"We urge motorists to slow down when approaching accident scenes to avoid putting the lives of first responders at risk."      

In September, traffic cop Zithulele Ntshangase and tow truck operator Kavish Ramnarayan were assisting the driver of a truck that overturned on the N3 near Liberty Mall, when another truck ploughed into the crash scene.  

Both men were killed.
