FCS unit takes lead in Cwecwe investigation

A special
team of investigators will probe the alleged rape of a seven-year-old girl in
the Eastern Cape.

National Police Commissioner, Fannie Masemola has added that the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Investigations Unit will take the lead on the case.
The child, known as Cwecwe, was allegedly assaulted at Bergville College in Matatiele, while waiting for transport to take her home.
The case, has sparked national outrage, leading to demonstrations in Durban, Cape Town, Pretoria, and Johannesburg under the #JusticeForCwecwe movement.
Protestors are demanding accountability particularly over the slow pace of investigations, which began back in October.
Police spokesperson, Athlende Mathe says FCS head, Mmantsheke Lekhele met with the investigating team to ensure that due diligence was conducted in the case and the chain of evidence properly preserved.
"Bringing criminals to book and putting perpetrators of crime behind bars remains a key priority for the SAPS.
“The SAPS assures the nation that justice will prevail and those that are found to be guilty of any offence will be brought to book. A comprehensive report will follow on conclusion of the work of the team led by [the] component head for [the] FCS."
Meanwhile an online petition, calling for justice for the little girl, has garnered over half a million signatures.
