officials have been dishing out fines to non-compliant food outlets following
inspections in the Pinetown CBD.

Health officers say one establishment had been operating without a business licence, and making and selling shawarmas in a dirty and unhealthy environment.
The municipality's environmental health officers say they're on a clean-up drive this week.
After penalising a shawarma business on Monday, inspectors visited another outlet where food safety issues had been raised before.
They were shocked to find unsanitary conditions with the shop drawing swarms of flies inside.

Basic hygiene practices weren't being adhered to, as workers handling the food weren't supplied with protective clothing.

The food itself wasn't covered to shield it from dust.
eThekwini says its campaign, which is continuing in Durban, focuses on cleanliness, compliance and issues of safety at food establishments.
