Embezzled funds from eThekwini Municipality balloons to R700m

Company documents, desktops and laptops - seized when the Hawks raided the homes of over a dozen eThekwini officials - are being analysed.
Investigators, swooped on the properties, as part of their probe into alleged corruption at the municipality.
Fifteen out of 18 properties were searched.
Spokesperson, Hangwani Mulaudzi says they're trying to recover some R700 million in municipal funds, embezzled from the Water and Sanitation Unit.
It's alleged service providers were paid for services not rendered.
Mulaudzi says despite the falsification of documents, payments were approved and a big chunk of them were allegedly sent to the officials under investigation.
"In June this year, we did make announcements that there was about R200 million that was siphoned off from the municipality.
"Based on investigations, we have now uncovered that a further R500 million could have been stolen. We are now going to take these items for analysis.
"Once the investigations have been completed, we will then have to take it to the NPA for a decision - whether we should affect the anticipated arrest or there are any other outstanding issues that we have to deal with."
