Durban beaches: Crews work to meet two-week deadline

eThekwini says clean-up crews will operate during the day until late afternoon to ensure they meet their two weeks deadline to clear the shoreline.
The municipality closed the Umgeni/Mangrove, Beachwood, Virginia and Glenashley beaches yesterday after medical waste washed up there.
Spokesperson Tozi Mthethwa says crews worked into the night but darkness hindered their progress to identify the objects they needed to remove.

''Day one of the clean-up is progressing well, we are spending the better part of the morning introducing some new members of the team to the cleaners protocol, distributing the necessary cleaning equipment.
''We hope that in the next few days they will be able to have covered good ground so we can have the beaches reopened within the time frame that was stated,'' she said.
Mthethwa says health inspectors are still investigating the source of the medical waste.
