DA slams settlement deal reached between eThekwini, Sipho Nzuza

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in eThekwini has criticised the settlement deal handed to corruption accused municipal manager Sipho Nzuza.

Full council agreed to terminate his contract with the city on Tuesday.

Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda's settlement agreement includes a mutual deal to pay Nzuza the remainder of his contract.

The outgoing manager had ten months left of his 5-year contract.

He'll be paid out about six months of his current salary, which amounts to over R1 million.

Nzuza is out on bail, following his arrest on fraud and corruption charges alongside former mayor, Zandile Gumede.

The DA's Nichole Graham says the deal's a slap in the face for ratepayers.

"Nzuza hasn't been suspended and only leave since early last year, which means that he has been earning this R3.29 million a year salary.

"The only thing the city done is stop one month of that salary when he wasn't at work and we had an acting city manager who is also being paid for doing that job."

COO Musa Mbhele takes the reins as acting city manager for the next three months.

He replaces Sipho Cele, the Deputy City Manager for Governance and International Relations, who served in that role
