DA to challenge VAT hike in court
Updated | By Jacaranda FM
The DA has filed an urgent application in the Western Cape
High Court over the VAT increase in the national budget.

On Wednesday, Parliament adopted the 2025 fiscal framework, which was supported by the ANC, IFP, the Patriotic Alliance and ActionSA.
The DA, EFF and the MK Party voted against it.
In its court application, the DA is seeking several orders.

"The first is to get the process on 1 April that transpired in Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Finance declared null and void because they were unprocedural.
“Therefore, to set aside any decision they took. The second part of Part A is to interdict a VAT increase on 1 May," says DA federal chairperson Helen Zille.
Zille says they are also challenging the constitutionality of a section of the VAT Act that gives the finance minister legislative powers.
"The second part of these papers is to get Section 7.4 of the VAT Act declared unconstitutional because it gives the minister the power to enforce a VAT increase without taking it through Parliament and without the need to have the fiscal framework and other legislation required passed in Parliament."
