D-day for Durban taxi drivers without permits
Updated | By Zongile Mthimkhulu
Taxi authorities in KwaZulu-Natal say it is now up to operators to meet today's driving permit application deadline.
Taxi drivers in Durban downed tools for several days in September after the municipality impounded more than 150 vehicles for not having the correct documentation.
Thousands of commuters were left stranded. Similar scenes played out during a strike in May.
SANTACO's Dumisani Ntuli says the operators have been given enough time.
''We had called all the operators, the chairman and secretaries of all 246 taxi associations and explained to them.
''If they don't meet the deadline today then they cannot put the blame on anyone because we've made sure that they have that information and they have enough time to submit their permit requirements for their operating licences,'' he said.
