Consumers urged to be wary of ATM-related scams

Financial institutions are warning consumers to be extra vigilant when making withdrawals and payments over the festive season.

They’ve noted a rise in ATM-related scams during this period due to a spike in cash withdrawals.


In its advisory to the public, FNB’s warned that opportunistic criminals,  are known to target consumers more over the year-end holidays, due to the spike in spending. 


It says the festive season presents an increased risk of fraudulent activities at cash out locations.


The bank says people should refrain from using ATMs that are visibly damaged or broken.

Don’t force your card into the slot of that machine.


You should immediately cancel a transaction if the screen looks different or strange.


The bank says that cardless cash withdrawals can be a safe option.


As a precaution, it also advises people to set a reasonable daily withdrawal limit on their card.
