ConCourt ‘failed to protect communists’ - SACP angry at Walus parole

The SA Communist Party says the parole order handed down to Janusz Walus has rubbed salt in the wounds of Chris Hani's family, and the world.

The Constitutional Court on Monday set aside the Justice Minister's decision to deny him parole in 2020, ordering Ronald Lamola to release 69-year-old Walus on parole within 10 days. The Polish immigrant, who was convicted of assassinating the SACP leader in 1993, has served 28 years at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Facility.

The SACP's Alex Mashilo says it has far-reaching implications.

"Chris Hani was murdered for being a communist, so tomorrow someone can be murdered for being a communist and on the day they eligible for parole they can go out."

His attempts, over a decade, to be released on parole were unsuccessful.

Mashilo says the court has failed to protect the right to exist as a communist.

"What do we do? The committee will have to calm the matter to adopt a way forward so that we can protect ourselves. if the court can't protect us then it can't be true that the assassin is the victim and only victim."
