Community safety teams launched in Richmond
Updated | By Puseletso Petersen
Safety Committees are being launched in Richmond today as part of crime-fighting efforts in the Midlands town.
The Community Safety Department says the committees are made up of community members, who are committed to creating a safer environment.
Richmond has been rocked by a number of high-profile murders believed to be politically-motivated.
"We have seen many incidents of the killing of community leaders. Earlier this year, there was a killing of a municipal manager, a deputy, a mayor and a councillor in the same municipality, so we feel strongly that we need to create strong and solid community structures who will be able to work closely with the police to be able to fight the scourge of crime in the area," spokesperson, Mluleki Mntungwa says.
