Jane Govindasamy and her children, 22-year-old Denisha and 16-year-old Nikita, were killed in their flat in September last year.

Their bodies were found by Govindasamy’s husband, Sagren.

Pillay, who was allegedly having an extra-marital affair with Jane Govindasamy, was convicted in the Durban High Court on Thursday.

There were sighs of relief in court the moment Judge Zaba Nkosi handed down judgement.

He says all the circumstantial evidence including CCTV footage, DNA, cellphone and witness accounts show that Pillay’s version of events on the day of murders is false beyond all reasonable doubt.

Pillay claims he was out gambling on the day of the killings.

Nkosi says he had no reason to believe that the witness statements were not factual.

The judge says it’s also clear from text messages Pillay and Jane Govindasamy exchanged on the day of the murders, that they weren’t in a good space, as Pillay told Govindasamy that he knew she was with someone else.

Nkosi says questions on where Pillay got the knife that he was seen in footage discarding, and why the victims’ blood was found on his clothes, weren’t answered to his satisfaction.

He says the evidence against Pillay is striking.
