Claims emerge suspect in Chatsworth drug bust an SGB member
Updated | By Bernadette Wolhuter
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education is investigating claims that one of two men arrested on drug dealing charges in Chatsworth at the weekend, is the chair of a local school governing body.
Police say the pair was arrested on Sunday and that large quantities of heroin, rock cocaine and mandrax - valued at more than R1.3 million - were seized.
"Reports are saying the suspect was part of a school governing body. Members of the school governing body may want to reflect and see if its okay for them to keep this kind of character within the structure," the department's Kwazi Mthethwa said.
Mthethwa says the matter is with the courts and that the department won't interfere but will probe the allegations.
"This is very disappointing but we are trying to get more information about that. We have been informed that the matter has now been handed to police. We are hoping that they are going to do what they are suppose to do," he said.
