Call for eThekwini Speaker to call out councillors for unpaid utility bills
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Pressure's being heaped on eThekwini Speaker Thabani Nyawose to call out councillors who are not paying their utility bills.

According to the Municipal Public Accounts Committee report, Durban's councillors have racked up debts of R1.27 million in unpaid bills.
The report fingered around 45 councillors.
The DA's eThekwini caucus leader Thabani Mthethwa says this is unacceptable and presents a problem of double standards.

He says they will ask the Speaker to investigate.
"It is very clear that councillors cannot have outstanding amounts. It is extremely worrying that custodians of the municipality's finances would be the ones who are implicated and fingered.
"We as councillors cannot expect members of the public to pay their accounts on time when instead some councillors don't do so. So we call upon the Speaker to conduct a thorough investigation."
