Bid to end child marriage in rural areas
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
Jozini residents have voiced their support for efforts to end child marriage in rural areas.
Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Social Development has kicked off public hearings on the Children's Amendment Bill in KwaZulu Natal.
It's considering changes to legislation aimed at preventing child marriages.
Chairperson Nonkosi Mvana says they've heard from Jozini community members who also support the removal of a clause in the principal act that gives guardians the authority to grant permission for underage marriage.
She says it's clear the judicial system needs to be strengthened to protect children.

"We are getting a positive response most of the people and the districts that we have visited here in KZN are supporting the bill which makes us happy. Of course, they are raising their concerns. A few of the disabled people say they don't see what we have amended on it."
eThekwini residents will have their say on the Children's Amendment Bill on Tuesday.
