Ballito incident highlights safety issues, says Cosatu

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) in KZN says the construction incident in Ballito has brought work safety issues back into the spotlight.

Four people lost their lives, and one was seriously injured when a sandbank collapsed at a job site on Zen Drive over the weekend.
Compliance checks will form part of Employment and Labour's investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, the trade union federation’s provincial secretary, Edwin Mkhize, urged employees to speak up about their workplace safety concerns.

"We know that most of the workers sometimes don't challenge their rights in fear of victimisation. The law is clear workers cannot be compelled to worker under hazardous conditions."
