Thabani Mzolo is appearing in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Mzolo is accused of shooting dead Khumalo at her city centre university residence last Tuesday.

During his first court appearance, the accused appeared to be smiling and in a jovial mood which caused upset among students.

It's understood the 21-year-old first year student had previously been in a relationship with him.

MUT SRC president, Sandile Dlamini says they visited the Khumalo family in eShowe yesterday to give them support.

"The family is very devastated. What makes matters worse is that Zolile's father isn't well. One can imagine what it does to you when receiving news that he has lost a daughter. They are devastated - it's an emotional situation," he said.
