8 killed in orphanage fire north of Durban

Eight people including several children have been killed in a fire at an orphanage in Parlock north of Durban.

Emergency services were called to the scene at about 2.20am.


KZN Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Robert Mckenzie says firefighters have managed to extinguish the blaze.


He says the victims are between 8 and 21-years-old.


"Reports from the scene are that tragically eight people have sustained fatal injuries in this horrific fire. The victims include several children. Emergency services, including KZN Emergency Medical Services, Firefighters, Metro Police and SAPS, are currently at the scene," he said.


Four people are receiving treatment in hospital.


The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage.
