Winners and highlights of the MTV VMAs 2022

Let's take a look at what went down at this year's MTV VMAs...

The past weekend was a big in terms of awards. 

Not only did Mzansi enjoy the SAMAs, but the MTV VMAs were also held over the weekend.

They took place on Sunday (28 August) at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

The awards were hosted by LL Cool J, Nicki Minaj, and Jack Harlow. 

Guests were entertained by performances from Eminem and Snoop Dogg, Lizzo, Blackpink, and Italian rock band Maneskin.

One of the biggest highlights was when Johnny Depp made a surprise appearance as the 'Moonman' and joked that he "needed work".

Anitta made history by becoming the first Brazilian winner. She scooped the 'Best Latin' award and performed 'Envolver'.  

"This is the first time Brazil [is represented] in these awards. I was born and raised in the ghetto, and tonight, I performed music that was once considered a crime in my country. Thanks to my family and fans," she said. 

Taylor Swift was shot rapping to Nicki Manaj's 'Super Bass' in the audience. She also won 'Video of The Year' and had a special announcement. Read all about it here

Another special moment was when Nicki remembered Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson and spoke about mental health. 

"I wish people took mental health seriously," she said while accepting the Video Vanguard Award. 

Lizzo used the platform to ask people to vote against "laws that are oppressing us". The '2 Be Loved' singer accepted the 'Video for Good' award for her song 'About Damn Time'.
