South African film 'Inxeba', also known as 'The Wound', hit the big screen in France this week, and distributors hope it will attract 50,000 moviegoers.

The movie, which will hit 41 big screens across France, premiered at cinemas on Wednesday under the name 'Les Initiés'.

'The Wound' is a co-production between SA, France, Germany, and The Netherlands.

It is director John Trengove's first feature film, and is co-written by Thando Mgqolozana and Malusi Bengufirst.

The film tells the story of a lonely factory worker named Xolani who leaves his job and returns to the Eastern Cape mountains to act as a caregiver to a group of boys during their initiation into manhood.

The movie explores circumcision, masculinity, and homosexuality.

'The Wound' made its international debut at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, earlier this year.

It also opened the Panorama section at the Berlin International Film Festival in February.

Movie critics praised Nakhane Touré, who plays Xolani, for his outstanding performance in the film.

The Hollywood Reporter described his screen debut as "impressive".

'The Wound' is set to premiere locally at the Durban International Film Festival in June.
