Sofia Vergara on why her marriage ended: 'I didn't want to be an old mom'

The 'Modern Family' star and her ex-husband Joe Manganiello were not on the same page when it came to having children.
Sofia Vergara is getting real about what led to the breakdown of her marriage to actor Joe Manganiello.
The former couple tied the knot in a lavish wedding ceremony in 2015.
Joe filed for divorce from Sofia in July 2023. The 47-year-old 'True Blood' actor listed "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the split.
Speaking to El País in a new interview, Sofia said their marriage ended because they couldn't agree on children.
"I’m newly divorced from my second husband, who I was with for 10 years. My marriage broke up because my husband was younger; he wanted to have kids and I didn’t want to be an old mom. I feel it’s not fair to the baby. I respect whoever does it, but that’s not for me anymore," the 51-year-old told the Spanish newspaper.

While married to Joe, Sofia was involved in a bitter court battle with her ex-fiancé Nick Loeb.
The pair, who called it quits in 2014, fought over two frozen embryos they created via IVF during their relationship. Joe wanted custody rights to the embryos, but Sofia did not want to give him consent to use them after their break-up.
"In 2013, Sofía and I agreed to try to use in vitro fertilization and a surrogate to have children. We signed a form stating that any embryos created through the process could be brought to term only with both parties’ consent. The form did not specify — as California law requires — what would happen if we separated. I am asking to have it voided," Nick wrote in an Op-Ed shared in The New York Times in 2015.

Many have asked me: Why not just move on and have a family of your own? I have every intention of doing so. But that doesn’t mean I should let the two lives I have already created be destroyed or sit in a freezer until the end of time- Nick Loeb, The New York Times Op-Ed
A judge ruled in Sofia's favour in 2021 and Nick was not allowed to use the embryos without her consent.
The Colombian-American actress has an adult son, whom she shares with her high-school boyfriend Joe Gonzalez. The pair wed when Sofia was just 18 years old. They welcomed a son named Manolo when she was 19.
While Sofia has no desire to have any more kids, she told El País that she is looking forward to becoming a grandmother.
"I had a son at 19, who is now 32, and I’m ready to be a grandmother, not a mother. So, if love comes along, he has to come with [his own] children. I’m almost in menopause; it’s the natural way of things. When my son becomes a dad, let him bring the baby to me for a while and then I’ll give it back to him and go on with my life; that’s what I have to do."
