Shakira's team confident she will win "baseless" tax fraud case
Updated | By Tamlyn Canham
The 'Waka Waka' hitmaker is facing eight years in prison for tax fraud but her team is "confident in her innocence".
Shakira is in hot water with the tax man. Spanish prosecutors have accused the 'Te Felicito' singer of tax fraud.
Prosecutors claim Shakira did not pay the Spanish government taxes between 2012 to 2014. Officials are now seeking an eight-year prison sentence.
The Colombian star reportedly also faces a $15-million fine if she is found guilty.
Shakira has maintained her innocence in the matter. The 45-year-old's team is confident they will have a favourable outcome.
"Shakira has always cooperated and abided by the law, demonstrating impeccable conduct as an individual and a taxpayer, and faithfully following the counsel of PriceWaterhouse Coopers, a prestigious and globally recognized tax firm," a statement sent to PEOPLE reads.
The statement continues: "Unfortunately, the Spanish Tax Office, which loses one out of every two lawsuits with its taxpayers, continues to violate her rights and pursue yet another baseless case. Shakira is confident that her innocence will be proven by the end of the judicial process."
Shakira has rejected a plea deal offered by Spanish authorities.

Shakira has been in the news a lot recently. The singer and her husband Gerard Pique announced their divorce in a joint statement shared in June.
The star also made headlines after Jennifer Lopez revealed she hated their 2020 NFL half-time show because it meant they would get less solo time on stage.
