Rolene Strauss reveals tips for making your long-distance relationship work
Updated | By Tamlyn Canham
Is anyone in a long-distance relationship? Rolene has some great tips on how couples can overcome being separated for long periods of time.
Rolene says they were in a long-distance relationship for many years - and some of those years were while they were married and new parents.
The 30-year-old says long-distance relationships are probably one of the most difficult things to “get right”.
"These types of relationships don’t always survive their winter seasons. D’Niel and I were in a long-distance relationship for 6 YEARS! Of those 6 years we were married for 2 years and parents for 1 year (and Miss SA and Miss World happened in between). This time in our lives was not the easiest; however, we made it through," she wrote on Instagram.

Commit to each other!
Right from the start D’Niel and I made the decision to commit to each other and knew that we were in it for the long run. We chose each other and chose to trust one another, to be gentle, and to put in the hard work.
Build a strong foundation
We knew that if we can stand this test of time (and distance), our relationship will be rock solid. We used this time to develop a strong foundation that was built on good communication, unconditional respect, and patience for one another.
Live in the present
We had to learn how to live in the present, and decided to embrace every season and moment. When we were together, we were together! We focussed on each other and let go of any distractions. We tried to not overthink the goodbyes, but rather saw them as an opportunity for the heart to grow fonder again.
Rolene concluded her post that reminding her followers that "a long-distance relationship could be a blessing in disguise".

Rolene and Daniel announced their engagement in 2015. She revealed in 2020 Instagram post that they had been secretly engaged for six months during her reign as Miss World.
"Since 2011, you have been the one “constant” in my life. My rock, always there to support, always in the background, always giving everything for your family," the beauty queen wrote.
The couple tied the knot in February 2016 and have two sons together. Daniel often gushes about his wife on Instagram.
"@rolenestrauss has been by my side for the past 10 years, through the ups and the downs, the highs and the lows. We also started a few companies and projects together - some great successes and a few miserable failures.
"She is a graduated medical doctor with a master's degree in philosophy - we have numerous philosophical conversations about the "ideal business" and I just love her take on it," the 40-year-old entrepreneur gushed in one post.
