Cruz was accompanied by her Hollywood star husband Javier Bardem when she was admitted to Ruber Internacional hospital in Madrid yesterday – the same day that Kate Middleton welcomed her little boy in St Mary's Hospital in London.
The little girl is Penelope and Javier’s second child. They already have a two-year-old son Leonardo, who was born in Los Angeles in 2011.
On Saturday, a heavily pregnant Penelope was spotted at the Los Veranos de la Villa Music Festival in Madrid.
The 39 year old actress, who was originally thought to be due last month, looked in high spirits as she enjoyed the festivities with her hubby.
Penelope and Javier started dating in 2007. They got married in July 2010 in an intimate ceremony at a friend's home in the Bahamas.
The couple is notoriously private. In a recent interview Penelope revealed that she was keen to keep her children out of the spotlight.
"I want my son and my kids - if I have more - to grow up in a way that is as anonymous as possible," she said.
"The fact that his father and I have chosen to do the work we do doesn't give anybody the right to invade our privacy."
