Patient injured after farting during surgery

A woman in Japan passed gas on the operating table leading to a fire that left her with significant burns.

The woman was undergoing a procedure at the Tokyo Medical University Hospital in April at the time.

The university released a report on Friday following a review of the incident.

Officials say a probe found a laser that was being used on her cervix during the surgery ignited a fire after the patient passed gas, according to The Asahi Shimbun.

The woman, who is in her 30s, sustained burns on her waist and legs.

A committee, made up of independent experts, also found that there were no flammable materials in the operating room during the incident.

All equipment was also found to be in good working order.

“When the patient’s intestinal gas leaked into the space of the operation (room), it ignited with the irradiation of the laser, and the burning spread, eventually reaching the surgical drape and causing the fire,” the publication quoted the report.
