Paralysed bride achieves goal to walk down the aisle
Updated | By East Coast Radio
It’s the moment every bride dreams of,
walking down the aisle towards the man of her dreams.
But for Jaquie Farmer, who was paralysed in a swimming accident, that dream almost did not become a reality.
She was just 17-years old when she dived into a friend’s pool and broke her neck.
Her mother rushed her to hospital, where she received some terrible news: She was paralysed.
"I remember looking over at my mom saying, 'Am I going to be in a wheelchair forever?' And holding back tears she said, “If God wants you to walk, you'll walk," she told Fox59.
Jaquie says she could feel her limbs, but could not move them.
There was a glimmer of hope when she realised she could move her big toe.
While her physical conditions improved, certain activities were still difficult, and she required the help of a wheelchair to get around.
Five years after her swimming accident, Jaquie met Andy Goncher on Facebook after he sent her a friend request because he thought she was "drop dead gorgeous”.
When he popped the question two years later, she made it her goal to work hard to ensure she could walk down the aisle unassisted.
Jaquie spent long hours in physical therapy and at the gym in the hopes of gaining the strength she needed.
She arrived at her wedding ceremony in May 2016 in a wheel chair, but stunned her guests by getting up and walking towards her husband-to-be.
Her family were overcome with emotions, because not only did she achieve her goal to walk down the aisle, but she was also able to dance with her husband at the reception.
Tissues, anyone?
Her wedding photographers, Love Stories by Haile and Alec, captured the amazing moment.
Here are a few pictures from Jaquie’s big day.
