Here's why Oprah Winfrey thinks you should cut off jealous friends
Updated | By Tamlyn Canham
Oprah Winfrey says that "you can't really be friends with anybody who has a hint of jealousy". She explained why in a recent interview with her best friend, Gayle King.
Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King have been friends for nearly 50 years, and one secret to their long-lasting relationship is celebrating each other's successes.
The 'Queen of Talk' says jealous whispers can ruin friendships. Oprah and Gayle recently sat down with Melinda French Gates to discuss the power of deep female friendship.
One of the quotes from the interview went viral on social media, with scores of people sharing the clip. During their chat, Oprah told Melinda that you can't be friends with someone secretly jealous of you.
"The reason why I think our friendship has worked is because Gayle is happier, not happy but happier, for me for any kind of success or victory or challenge I get through than I am for myself," the 70-year-old said.
Oprah recalled how one of her friends made a snarky comment about her buying herself a dress.

She says the friend's tone left a bad taste in her mouth.
"We were out shopping, and she said, 'Oh, you're getting another black dress?' And I thought, hmm. Well, yeah, I am getting another black dress. And just the tone in which it was said. You can't really be friends with anybody who has a hint of jealousy about anything that you are doing," Oprah said.
The Emmy-winning host says if you pick up on jealous whispers from a so-called friend, you have to distance yourself from them.
Oprah says she has heard stories of people who were betrayed by friends. "If you are truly a friend, it's impossible to betray someone," she said.
Melinda agrees.
"I think if you keep a friend who betrayed you, you're betraying yourself," she told Gayle and Oprah.
MORE FROM EAST COAST RADIO:
The interview is part of a series that Melinda, who is the former wife of billionaire Bill Gates, premiered in July to celebrate a huge milestone in her life.
"To celebrate turning 60, Melinda French Gates sat down with iconic changemakers of all ages to talk about their biggest life transitions for a special series, 'Moments That Make Us'," a synopsis of the series reads.
Some of the guests in the series include Reese Witherspoon, Ava DuVernay, and Michelle Obama.
Oprah reflected on the interview in a post she shared on her website on Sunday, August 4. She says Gayle is the mother, sister, friend that she never had.
"I know some of you have been watching Melinda’s new series, Moments That Make Us. In fact, I saw a beautiful question from one of you in response to the episode Gayle and I were on, saying it made you think about how you show up in your friendships. So, I want to pose that question to all of you: How do you show up in your friendships?"
