Nara Smith says severe eczema caused her scalp to flake and bleed, leading to hair loss and low confidence.

Model and influencer Nara Smith is calling out internet trolls who send "hateful messages" because of how she chooses to wear her hair.

Smith, whose father is German and mother is South African, has naturally long curly hair.

However, she cut her brunette locks into a bob a few years ago and regularly straightens her hair.

Smith says she did so due to her struggle with severe eczema.

"I haven't worn my hair curly in about two years, and chopping my hair off wasn't a decision that I took lightly. After struggling with severe eczema all over my body and scalp, it ended up getting so bad that my scalp was flaking and bleeding. My hair was falling out and I had really bad hair loss," she said on Instagram.

The mom of three says washing her hair became almost impossible, and the ordeal affected her confidence.

"So, I made the decision to chop it off and straighten it to give my scalp a break."

Smith shared the story in a video she posted about a surprise she had planned for her husband, Lucky Blue

She revealed he has been begging to bring back her curls because he loves them so much. The social media star decided to surprise him by getting a curly hair sew-in.

"Seeing my curly hair today made me sob in the car, and I wasn't the only one because as soon as Lucky got back, he got emotional and couldn't stop smiling."

Smith also took to Instagram Stories to share pictures of how eczema has affected her body and scalp.

One image showed a small dry patch on the inside of her hand that she says "quickly evolved" into covering her hands before reaching her scalp.

A close-up picture of her scalp also showed dry and flaky skin.

The model says she struggles to do simple tasks like washing her curly hair when her hands experience an eczema breakout.

A fourth image showed her with swollen eyelids and dark under eyes.

"So, for anyone sending me hateful messages for choices I make on how I choose to wear my hair – stop making assumptions that are so outrageous when you have absolutely no idea what someone else is going through," she wrote.
