Local celebs attend 'The Color Purple' screening

'The Color Purple' will be showing in South African cinemas starting from Friday, 26 January.

South Africans are getting ready to watch one of the biggest movies that is currently showing in cinemas across the world. 

'The Color Purple' will grace South African cinemas from Friday, 26 January. 

Ahead of its official release, several South African celebrities attended the pre-screening at Montecasino on Wednesday, 24 January. 

Amongst those who attended were DJ and producer Mörda and singer Brenden Praise, who contributed a song to the movie. 

At the pre-screening, they were joined by the likes of Sophie Ndaba, Dawn Thandeka King, Miss SA 2021 and Miss Supranational 2022 Lalela Mswane, amongst many others. 

Pupils from The Oprah School also formed part of those who attended the pre-screening.

In America, the movie came out on Christmas Day. 

It stars Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Halle Bailey, and Colman Domingo, amongst others. 

The movie was produced by Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Quincy Jones, and Scott Sanders. 

On Wednesday, Oprah announced that Danielle was nominated for an Oscar for her role as Sofia in the movie. 

"Woke up to the news of @thedaniellebrooks being nominated for an Academy Award for Actress in a Supporting Role in @thecolorpurple. Talked to her immediately and we screamed and cried and jumped for joy together on the phone. Look what God has done," Oprah wrote on Instagram. 

This is not the first nomination the actor has received. 

"It is a joy for me to bring you my interview with the multi-talented @thedaniellebrooks. Her version of Sofia has garnered her nominations at the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, Critics Choice Awards, BAFTAs, and so many more. If you loved her in @thecolorpurple, you’re going to fall even more in love with her after this conversation,"  wrote Oprah on Instagram.
