Kim Kardashian criticised for calling cornrows 'Bo Derek braids'
Updated | By Tamlyn Canham
Kim Kardashian credited a white actress for her new cornrow hairstyle - and all hell broke loose online.
Reality star Kim Kardashian has come under fire for referring to her new cornrow hairstyle as "Bo Derek braids".
The 37-year-old first debuted her new do on Snapchat on Sunday.
"So guys, I did Bo Derek braids, and I am really into it," she says in the video.

Many people were offended that Kim credited Bo for the hairstyle, and accused her of cultural appropriation.
Bo Derek wore the braided style in her 1979 film, '10'.
But while the actress made the hairstyle popular, cornrows originated in Africa, and have been worn by black women for years.Â
Some pointed out that the style is actually known as Fulani braids (sometimes called cornrows), and Kim should give credit where it is due.
"Give the Fulani Tribe their credit , they’ve been wearing this style before Bo Derek was even born. You not gone keep taking whatever you want from us and think it’s ok," one Twitter user wrote.
Kim did not seem bothered by the backlash and continued to post pictures on Instagram of her new hairdo.
She even captioned one of the images, "Bo West".
It's not the first time Kim has been accused of cultural appropriation.
She received flak last year for dressing up as R&B singer Aaliyah, who is black, for Halloween.Â
Kim's sisters, Kylie Jenner and Khloe, have also come under fire for wearing cornrows in the past.
Khloe was also once slammed for wearing a Native American headdress and a Niqab during a trip to Dubai.
Social media users were divided over Kim's latest hair controversy.Â
But many seemed more offended that she gave Bo Derek the credit.
Girl Bo Derek wore these braids in 1979, so technically she’s not wrong. That’s just the reference she chose. pic.twitter.com/vMw0yR2Q2H

She thinks that by saying her inspiration is Bo Derek, then it isn’t appropriation.

Yuck. She’s so urgh.
They are called Fulani braids or some may even say corn rows. You could of called them either one but you called them "Bo derek" giving credit to a white woman for a black style knowing you already catch heat for culture vulturing. #KimKardashian #culturalvul pic.twitter.com/aIF4NzJ9rw

Bo Derek did not come up with these braids. The problem is you guys don’t like to give credit where it’s due . Give the Fulani Tribe their credit , they’ve been wearing this style before Bo Derek was even born . You not gone keep taking whatever you want from us and think it’s ok pic.twitter.com/TuU4xfkM8P

Kim Kardashian said she got "Bo Derek braids." She is 100% out here trolling Black women. You can't convince me otherwise. pic.twitter.com/LZeh4f8BqH

What’s the problem with Kim Kardashian having braids? Stop making nothing into something.

Kim ....these braids did not start and end with Bo Derek ....they originated from African culture pic.twitter.com/RQY8RTH6fX

I personally believe Cultural Appropriation is when you don’t give credit where it’s due...

The difference betwn culture appropriation and culture appreciation is credit. No where in this post or even in her life has she claimed she invented braids. Kim isn’t racist, the “culture appropriation” chant is tired and needs to stop. Save it for when it’s actually needed.
