Beyoncé' and Jay-Z's New Orleans mansion was gutted by a fire this week and police believe someone started the fire on purpose.

Officers were called out to the $2.6 million (R35-million) mansion on Wednesday after a "suspicious person" was reported in the vicinity.

When they arrived at the scene they found the property on fire.

According to TMZ, it took 22 firefighters to put out the flames. The three-storey building was built in 1925. It started out as a Presbyterian church, but later became a ballet school.

It is now made up of the main residence and three separate apartments. According to NOLA.com, a shell company bought the property in 2015. The company listed the mailing address of Beyoncé' and Jay-Z's management firm, Parkwood Entertainment.

The couple was not at the mansion when the fire broke out. No injuries were reported.

"Inside the house, I’ve never seen any activity in the two years I’ve been here. No activity at all," a neighbour told NOLA.
