Charlize Theron talks raising daughters: 'They're so embarrassed by me'

The mom of two says her daughters are "firecrackers" who keep her on her toes.
Charlize Theron is opening up about the challenges of motherhood.
The 48-year-old actress spoke fondly about her daughters, Jackson and August, in a new interview with E! News. She revealed that her children are at the age where they get embarrassed by everything she does.
"Oh, my God, they're so embarrassed by me constantly. They’re kids, they're girls, you know? I have a preteen, and I feel like I have a nine-year-old who thinks she's a 13-year-old. It’s a lot of girl in our house," Charlize said.
The Oscar-winner, who was speaking at the recent Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP) 2024 Block Party, has her hands full with two witty girls in the household.
"I'm just trying to keep my head above water, because they are smart and they are witty and they are firecrackers, but they do not go, ‘Oh my god, Mom, you're so amazing.’ They’re like, ‘Excuse me, I need. I want.’ They're a***holes, but they’re really nice. Other parents know what I’m talking about," she told E!.

With the nature of her career and the glaring media eye that comes with it, Charlize tries to keep her daughters grounded by keeping them out of the spotlight.
She occasionally shares pictures on social media of Jackson and August, whom she adopted in 2012 and 2015, respectively, but they are few and far between.
Despite constantly being followed by the paparazzi, Charlize tries to do "regular" things with her daughters, like going to Disney World or attending a concert.

Charlize is also fiercely protective of her children. She has had to shield them from negative comments after she revealed that Jackson, who was born a boy, identifies as a girl.
"Yes, I thought she was a boy, too. Until she looked at me when she was three years old and said: 'I am not a boy!' So there you go! I have two beautiful daughters who, just like any parent, I want to protect and I want to see thrive," she told the Daily Mail in 2019.
Charlize added that her children "were born who they are" and it is not for her to decide "where in the world both of them get to find themselves as they grow up".
"My job as a parent is to celebrate them and to love them and to make sure that they have everything they need in order to be what they want to be. And I will do everything in my power for my kids to have that right and to be protected within that."
