Beyoncé and Jay-Z pay tribute to Meghan Markle
Updated | By Tamlyn Canham
The
Duke of Sussex just got a shout out from music royalty!
Beyoncé and her husband Jay Z used their 2019 BRIT Awards acceptance speech to pay homage to Meghan Markle.
The couple won “Best International Group” at Wednesday night’s ceremony but were unable to attend the British ceremony. Instead, a video message of the stars accepting their prize was played for the audience.
The footage showed Queen B and J recreating a scene from their music video, ‘Ape S**t’.
In the original video, the musicians stood in front of a Mona Lisa painting. They replaced the Mona Lisa portrait with one of Meghan Markle wearing a tiara. Meghan's portrait was created by illustrator Tim O’Brien.

Beyoncé shared the BRIT Awards clip on her Instagram page.
“In honor of Black History Month, we bow down to one of our Melanated Monas. Congrats on your pregnancy, we wish you so much joy,” she wrote.
Many of the “Drunk in Love” hitmaker’s fans felt the tribute was fitting as the Duke of Sussex has had her fair share of negative press in the British media.
From claims she has a tiff with fellow royal Kate Middleton to criticism of her rebellious royal ways (how dare she wear dark coloured nail polish), the Duchess can’t seem to get a break.
"Beyonce and Jay Z accepting their award with a photo of Meghan Markle in the background is such a dig at the British media and I love it," one Twitter user wrote.

This is the respect Meghan Markle really deserves in UK instead of all low key racist headlines targeting her heritage #BRITs

I hope #samanthamarkle #FixatedPerson isn't too upset about that beautiful painting of Meghan which Beyonce & Jay Z chose to hang up in their home. Sam's photo is hanging on someone's wall, too...somewhere, in a Fixed Threat Center...all eyes on her. 😆😆 pic.twitter.com/dvWP2YPpJ0

The British press might not love Meghan, but her famous friends do. Serena Williams and Amal Clooney co-hosted a baby shower for the royal in New York.
The star-studded guest list included Meghan's best friend, stylist Jessica Mulroney, former "Suits" co-star Abigail Spencer, TV personality Gayle King and designer Misha Nonoo - who is believed to be the person who set up Prince Harry and Meghan on their blind date.
Meghan’s five-day trip to the States was a private one and little information was provided to media. She has since flown back to England.
The 37-year-old is expected to welcome her first child in April.
