Show your mom how awesome she is this Mother’s Day without breaking the bank.

While your mother is worth a million bucks (and more), buying her a gift that costs a fortune in this tough economy is not always possible.

For most moms, it really is the thought that counts, and not the price tag attached to the gift.

Here are some cost-friendly presents that will not only save you a pretty penny, but put a smile on her face this Mother’s Day.

Breakfast in bed

It doesn’t matter whether you are a Jamie Oliver in the kitchen or not, this Mother’s Day tradition never fails to impress. Whip up your mother’s favourite pancakes, French toast or blueberry muffins. The best part about this gift is not only will it put a smile on her face, but you would have just about everything you need from your refrigerator!

Memories in a box

Take a trip down memory lane by giving your mother a pretty box full of your favourite memories together. This gift is sure to be a tear-jerker and one your mom will treasure for years to come. Decorate a shoe box with adorable paper. Then fill it with pictures, letters, cards, and anything special that reminds you of your mother. Don’t forget to have some Kleenex on standby.

A day off

Give your mom a break this Mother’s Day and treat her to a day off. That means no chores, no cooking, no fussing over the family. Make her a nice cup of coffee, and let her relax while you take care of everything. You might want to give her a bell so that you answer to her every need. You might be dog tired at the end of the day, but she is worth it!

DIY candles

Candles are a great gift for moms, but they can be quite costly. The great news is they are easy to make. Add an extra touch by melting your children’s crayons for the mix. All you need for this gift are old crayons, a small juice glass, wax, and a candle wick (or cotton string). You can even add drops of essential oils to make them scented.  Check out this easy tutorial we found online here

Time

And finally, all your mother really wants from you is more time.  Life can get a bit crazy when you have a career, family of your own or live quite a distance from your mother. We sometimes forget to call or visit. Even sadder, when families do get together they spend far too much time on their smartphones. All your mom needs this Mother’s Day is a day spent with you, even if it means sitting on the couch reminiscing about your childhood.

If none of these interest you, we have a few ideas on which gifts to avoid to make your search easier.

Gifts to avoid

Slippers:

The last thing your mother needs is another pair of fluffy slippers. You probably bought that last year as well.

Electronics and homeware:

Unless your mom has been dropping hints about a mixer she is dying to get her hands on, try to avoid buying her electronics or stuff she can use around the house – which is more for her family’s benefit than hers. Electronics usually rank high up in the worst gifts to get for Mother’s Day.

Cheesy cards:

Nothing says “no effort was put into this gift” than a store bought card, with a printed message (adding “love, Bob” doesn’t count).  Unless this is an add-on to an actual gift, avoid at all costs.  That being said, funny cards that match their personality are okay in desperate last minute gift situations.

Flowers:

Like slippers, you probably bought you mum flowers last Mother’s Day, on Valentine’s Day, her birthday, her wedding anniversary and … you get the point.  Moms love flowers, just not as an all year round gift!

If you have bought any of these gifts, take comfort in knowing that whatever you buy, your mum will love, because it comes from her greatest gift of all - you! Yes, that was cheesy, but at least you won’t find it on a Mother’s Day card.
