Alec and Hilaria Baldwin's tense red carpet exchange

Alec Baldiwn and his wife Hilaria are in the news again after an awkward red carpet interview went viral online. 

The drama unfolded during an appearance at an event for the re-launch of Planet Hollywood in New York.

During an interview with Extra TV, the couple was asked about their new reality show, 'The Baldwins', which debuted on TLC in February. 

While Hilaria was trying to answer the question, Alec interjected: "The Hilaria Show. It's gonna be great. You're a winner."

She then cuts him off: "Oh my God. When I'm talking, you're not talking." 

To which he replied: "I'm sorry."

Alec then walks off and starts talking to someone off-camera.

It's hard to tell whether the couple was just joking with each other or if they were genuinely upset, but social media found the exchange disturbing.

"He needs a divorce NOW!" one X user wrote. 

A second person commented: "Nope!!!!!! There isn’t any respect there. Not worth it!"

"Hilaria Baldwin emasculates her husband in public. A HUGE rule of mine, always be each other biggest fan in public. I know it’s Alec, making a point here," a third said. 

The social media user also mentioned that they had watched the couple's show – and it certainly raised some eyebrows.

"I saw a clip from the show, he is allergic to cats, they were going on a road trip and had to drive separately and she made him take the car with the cats!" the woman wrote.

While some have suggested that the exchange was a stunt to promote their reality show, it is not the first time the Baldwins have found themselves at the centre of a scandal. 

In 2020, Hilaria was accused of faking her Spanish heritage. 

Hilaria, who was born Hillary Lynn Hayward-Thomas and grew up in Boston, Massachusetts, was accused of pretending to be from Spain. 

It appears even her husband was convinced of her alleged Spanish roots. 

"My wife is from Spain," Alec told David Letterman in a 2013 interview. Hilaria even had a Spanish accent to prove it.

However, it later came to light that she was not from Spain and only vacationed in the country growing up. Her former classmates claimed she didn't have a Spanish accent in high school.

She reportedly changed her name from Hilary to Hilaria around 2009, when she would have been in her 20s. Neither one of her parents is Spanish, but they moved to Mallorca, Spain, in 2011 to retire.

Clips of Hilaria seemingly forgetting the English words for "cucumber" and "onion" have gone viral, despite the former yoga instructor growing up in America, and English being her native tongue. 

Hilaria has also given almost all of the couple's seven children Spanish names: Rafael, Leonardo, Eduardo, María, Ilaria and Carmen.

Some fans have pointed out that the thickness of her Spanish accent changes from time to time. 

Hilaria has denied cultural appropriation accusations, saying she is being misrepresented. She says she grew up in a bilingual household and has a strong connection to Spain after spending time in the country. 

"'I think just growing up speaking two languages is extremely special. I love English and I also love Spanish, and when I mix the two, it doesn't make me inauthentic. When I mix the two, it makes me normal!" she said in the first episode of their reality show, per the Daily Mail.
