WATCH: KZN voters get an early start at the polls

The fifth official local government elections have officially kicked-off. With millions of people across the country expected to cast their votes today, voting in KwaZulu-Natal has started slowly but steadily.

Our Newswatch reporters are travelling throughout the province today to bring you official coverage of voting day. These are just some of the early-morning voters who have already taken to the polls.

In Port Edward, south of Durban, 21-year-old brothers Viwe Vundle and Kwandiwe Mfingwana have made their mark for the first time. The brothers said they were excited about not only being first-time voters, but that they had the opportunity to vote together. They’ve urged the youth of South Africa to be the change they want to see in this country.

Denise Temple from Pietermaritzburg was first in line this morning to vote at the Trinity Church in Hilton. Temple moved to South Africa from the UK a few years ago, and encouraged South Africans not to throw in the towel when it comes to effecting change in the country. She highlighted the importance of voting, adding that South Africa is filled with “so much hope and potential.”

Not even harsh winds could deter voters in Mahlabathini, uLundi from the polls this morning. A steady stream of voters – both young and old – have already made their way to the Buthelezi Traditional Court voting station, to cast their ballots.

Newswatch will continue to bring you coverage of voting in the province throughout the day.
