New daily Covid-19 cases climb over 20 000 mark

The number of new Covid-19 cases in the country continues to soar as a result of the more transmissible Omicron variant and with all provinces now in the fourth wave.

Statistics released by the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) on Thursday show that the country’s new Covid-19 infections rose to 22391 cases over the 24 hours.
This is a representation of a 29.8% positivity rate.
Gauteng still remains the country’s epicentre, with 11 791 new cases recorded.
The province is followed by KwaZulu-Natal at 2 756 cases recorded and the Western Cape province at 2 194 new infections.
Despite the high number of new cases, the number of Covid-19 related fatalities remains low.
Only 22 Covid-19 related deaths were recorded in the 24 hours leading up to Thursday evening.
