Covid-19 infections on the rise, over 800 new cases reported

Amid the fears over the looming fourth wave in South Africa, the total number of Covid-19 cases are closing in on 3 million.

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) said on Saturday evening that 887 new Covid-19 cases had been recorded since its previous report.
This increase represents a 2.8% positivity rate.
The total number of Covid-19 cases now stands at 2 929 175.
The majority of new cases reported on Saturday are from Gauteng (66%), followed by 12% in the Northern Cape.
The death toll has climbed to 89 572 with 10 new coronavirus-related deaths reported.
Meanwhile, the Department of Health reports that 35 111 doses of vaccine had been administered over the past 24 hours.
Close to 14 million people have now been fully vaccinated.
