Protests turned violent at the university after students embarked on a protest contesting the proposed fee increase for 2017.

This resulted in a stand-off between students and campus security - with rocks being thrown in both directions.

Students have vowed to keep the campus gates closed until there's a resolution.

Wits' Acting Vice Chancellor, Tawane Kupe gave feedback after the University's Executive Council meeting and appealed for the violence to end.

"Students threw stones at the police. Private security threw stones at the students. That is unprofessional. That conduct is being investigated and a report is almost ready. Then, we are taking it up with the company and our legal office is going to look the recourses we have," Kupe said.

The campus has been closed for the week, but students will be holding a mass-meeting again this afternoon.
