Westville Prison officials say the manager who had locked himself in the arsenal of the facility's Medium A section is thought to have suffered a heart attack.
The incident was initially thought to be a hostage situation and police were called.
KZN Correctional Services spokesperson Thulani Mdluli says the man who's an Arsenal Controller locked himself in the room after arriving at work this morning.
Mdluli says they were able to get to him through a window and found him lying on the ground.
He says the man's been rushed to eThekwini Heart Hospital.
"It is unfortunate that it happened when he had already locked the door. As an Arsenal Controller whenever you get inside the arsenal, you must lock the doors.
"We don't know what happened inside the arsenal but the condition that is illness-related led to him not being able to respond nor be able to unlock the doors," he said.
