Water tankers reduced in iLembe District

Residents of some areas in the iLembe District Municipality are in for tougher times as the municipality's had to reduce the number of water tankers they are supplying them.

Mayor Welcome Mdabe says the persistent drought has drained the municipality's funds.

Mdabe says the municipality has over the past two years hired 41 water tankers at a rate of around R3.5 million per month.

They've now had to reduce that to about 20 water tankers.

He says this means areas that received water tankers daily will now be receiving water less frequently.

"It would have a severe effect to the community as far as the rate of return for the supply of water.

"Meaning that if the water tanker comes on a Monday, that water tanker might return to that particular ward in 3-4 days time. So that is the challenge that we are facing," he said.

Areas that will be affected include Indwedwe, Maphumulo, northern Kwadukuza and certain parts of Mandeni.
