Violent protesters to face legal wrath
Updated | By Khatija Nxedlana
Kwazulu-Natal Community Safety MEC Willies Mchunu presented the department’s budget vote speech at the Provincial Legislature in Pietermaritzburg.
Many of the protests, most of which have been service delivery-related, have been characterised by the destruction of public and private property, arson, blocking of busy roads and burning tyres.
Mchunu says the majority of protests in the province are unlawful gatherings and demonstrations.
The department is now considering other legal remedies to deal with these problems.
A provincial legal task team has now been set up to develop a comprehensive legal strategy against unlawful and violent protests," said Mchunu.
