UPDATE: The situation at universities across the province

It's business as usual at most universities across the province. However, there's a strong police presence at various institutions - after a week fueled by violent student protests, arrests, and severe damage to property.

At DUT, the academic programme remains suspended for the day. Classes at all campuses will resume on Monday.

University management decided to suspend lectures for the week, following violent clashes between protesting students and police this week.

The EFF Student Command at DUT this week threatened to disrupt classes if their grievances were not heard by management - but this has failed to materialize.

Meanwhile, at UniZulu, lectures have resumed. However, the seven-week staff strike continues unabated.

Last night, a security guard was assaulted during protests at the institution. He remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

At UKZN, classes are continuing at all five campuses.

SACP members at UKZN's Howard College will today launch the Chris Hani Red Hearts - an organization created to curb the destruction of campus property.

Meanwhile, the case against 11 UKZN Pietermaritzburg students - who were arrested last week during violent clashes with riot police - is currently being heard in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court.

Later this afternoon, students from all campuses are expected to attend a #FeesMustFall meeting at a Durban mall, to allegedly discuss a resolution to the ongoing protests.
