The Mail and Guardian is today reporting that Professor Xoliswa Mtose received a handsome performance bonus totalling R478 000  - which some members of staff are said to be unhappy about.

There are claims she was the only one to receive financial  incentive while she was acting and getting an annual salary of R2.9 million.

The weekly is also reporting that instead of staying in an on-campus home reserved for her and worth R4.7 million  - the university has instead put her up in a lavish and fully-furnished home in the Zini River Estate in Mtunzini on the north coast.

It's one of several houses the university is said to have bought for executives in the estate to the tune of R26 million.

UniZulu spokeperson Gcina Nhleko says it was the council that suggested that all executives of the institution be housed off-campus in 'secure' accommodation.

"Everything that was done is in accordance with the rules, procedures as well as set policies. The university council is a governance structure of the university, so all these expenditures were actually approved within lines - no authority was overstepped," she said.

Nhleko would neither confirm nor deny whether or not Mtose was awarded the bonus.
