"We were unable to gain access to the train due to the road which was blocked by two massive trees. We first had to cut the trees and move them from the roadway then we managed to gain access to that train.

"Upon investigation, we found the driver and the assistant were fatally wounded," he said.

It's understood the train had been transporting hazardous chemicals but no spillage was reported.

Meanwhile, five people are receiving treatment after two vehicles collided head-on along the Edendale Road in Pietermaritzburg last night.

ER24 says medics raced to the scene at about 8pm and found that one person was seriously hurt.
